High Level Walkways

The upcoming stage of the restoration focuses on the high level Walkways, 42 metres above the River Thames. The chosen system for restoring the two Walkways causes minimal impact to our Exhibition visitors, event clients, road users and pedestrians. Two 40ft cradles will be applied to the underside of each Walkway at the South end and the middle. When paint removal and repainting commences, each cradle will be moved along the Walkway until work is complete. Restoration will not begin on the second walkway until the process has been completed on the first.

We are pleased to announce that Tower Bridge Exhibition will remain fully open throughout this stage of the restoration and steps have been taken to ensure that visitors to Tower Bridge Exhibition enjoy an enhanced experience during the painting works. For the 40ft areas affected within each Walkway, movable panels will be installed showcasing unique historic photography, as well as our two fantastic photographic exhibitions, ‘River Thames: Source to Sea’ and ‘Great Bridges of the World’.

The restoration will begin in the last week of June 2010. Work will be carried out between 08.00 and 18.00 Monday to Friday, and between 10.00 and 16.00 on Sundays. According to the schedule we have been given, it is expected that both Walkways will be fully restored by the middle of November 2010.

This method requires a number of road closures, each of which will only take place between night hours of 23.00 and 05.00. A full list of road closures is below.
