Raised bascule during the restoration of Tower Bridge

During the night-time road closures, the bascules were raised to expose the defective parts that cannot be reached when the bascules are in the down position. Finishing touches to Tower Bridge

The polyethylene wraps and scaffolding have now been removed from the bascules as the repainting of Tower Bridge nears completion. The new paintwork, which has a life expectancy of 25 years, is essential to protect the steelwork and preserve the iconic structure for future generations. More than 22,000 litres of paint will eventually be used as the bridge is being repainted in its white and blue colour...

Removing the defective coatings

Work is now well underway on removing the defective coatings from under the East Walkway of Tower Bridge. The defective coatings (rust and paint) are being removed using needle guns. The tool itself uses an electrical current to rotate needles at varying speeds against the metallic surface to slowly chip away at the numerous layers of paint and rust.
