Scaffolding the Bascules nears completion
Work on erecting the scaffolding around the bascules nears completion.
Specialist painting contractors have now started to restore the South West Turnstile and the fencing surrounding the Control Cabin on the South Tower.
The new paintwork, which has a life expectancy of 25 years, is essential to protect the steelwork and preserve the bridge for future generations.

Scaffolding the Tower Bridge Bascules
Work is now underway on erecting the scaffolding around the Tower Bridge bascules, the ‘see-saw’ elements of the road. This means that there will be no Bridge Lifts for vessels taking place until the end of March when the work is due to be completed.

First cradle is dismantled on Tower Bridge
The first ALPS Space Frame platform (cradle) under the West Walkway has been dismantled on Tower Bridge.
It takes two full nights to dismantle each platform, after the first night, the partly dismantled platform has to be raised again and then lowered the following night, when it is then completely dismantled.

Temporary access staircase
Contractors have erected a temporary access staircase on the South Tower, which will be used during the restoration of the Walkways. Two 40ft cradles will be applied to the underside of each walkway. Work on paint removal and repainting will commence on the East Walkway in approximately 10 days time.

The polyethylene wraps have been removed and the scaffolding has nearly been dismantled on the North West Suspension Chain of Tower Bridge. The north west balustrades and lamp stands are currently being grit blasted.
